Finding the Spark
Sharon’s journey began as a teenager when she helped her father teach an adult learn-to-swim class. Seeing adults in their 30s, 50s, and 60s face the water for the first time sparked a lifelong passion.
Overcoming Barriers Through Communication
Today, Sharon holds a remarkable range of qualifications, operating as an Advanced Aquaphobia Coach, Puggles Pro Skipper and Autism Swim Provider. Instead of keeping these skills in separate boxes, Sharon blends them to tailor every lesson to the individual in front of her.
Even with years of experience, Sharon encountered hurdles, particularly around non-speaking communication.
“I now realise that many of my students were communicating clearly through their body language, behaviors, and facial expressions—I just didn’t always know how to interpret them,” Sharon reflects.
Learning with Autism Swim bridged this gap. Armed with deeper insights, Sharon has gained the confidence to welcome families who previously struggled to find accommodating programs. Shifting the focus from expecting students to adapt, to adapting the teaching to the student, has unlocked incredible progress.
A Ripple Effect of Inclusion
In Sharon’s coastal community in Western Australia, water safety is a necessity, not a luxury. Her inclusive classes have created a beautiful ripple effect:
Students build confidence and learn at their own pace.
Families enjoy a judgment-free, relaxed environment.
Instructors become more creative, responsive, and adaptable.
For those starting their own journey in inclusive education, Sharon offers golden advice: “Stay curious and never assume that one approach will work for everyone. Some of the smallest adjustments can make the biggest difference.”
